Tactics that Will Aid Your Bass Fishing Experience

By Joyce J. Johnston

There are as many opposing facets to bass fishing; as there are fishermen to argue about them. Given the fact that there are always new techniques and discoveries arising about bass fishing, it would be impossible to at some point know all there is to know, no matter how long you have been fishing. Hopefully some of the suggestions we give you here will give you some insight on your next bass fishing trip.

Success in bass fishing begins with understanding where the fish actually are and going to that spot. Sometimes a fishing hole can have hundreds of fish, however it may not have the specific kind of fish that you are looking for. People that fish largemouth bass are well aware that you will only find them in certain types of aquatic environments. As a general rule, they like to have a large amount of baitfish to feed upon, weed beds, and have some type of shelter for cover. They also avoid the bright sun, and prefer water temperatures between 60F and 75F. And if you are looking for largemouth bass, try shallow waters that have lots of cattails and lily pads in the water. These fish, because they do not like sunlight, are typically found at dusk or dawn.

Fishermen often wear sunglasses and hats for practical reasons, they aren't trying to make a fashion statement. You can become sensitive to glare if you are on the water all day, even on those days that don't seem that bright. You can help keep this from occurring by wearing sunglasses that are polarized. Wearing them also lets you get a better view of what is going on under the waters surface. The best style of polarized sunglasses to use are either the ones with the side shields or the wraparound style. A hat with a long brim can also help you avoid the sun's glare and give you an edge when looking into the water.

Even though not as popular as largemouth bass with anglers, another kind of bass you might want to try to catch is the white bass, also called sandies. There is a well known event called the Spring White Bass run when the fish swim upstream to spawn and you could probably catch a many fish during this event.

While not as strict as the rules regarding sports like basketball, baseball or football, fishing does come with rules of etiquette that should be followed if you plan to enjoy this pastime. Finding out the local rules and regulations of the area you plan to fish should be done before you start fishing so that you can make sure you are doing it right. Privately owned areas are off limits unless you have the owners permission. Don't keep more fish than you need, or that you're permitted to take. Don't crowd other nearby fishermen; the worst breach of etiquette in fishing is to encroach on someones area because you see they are catching fish.

Although frustrating at times, bass fishing is a very enjoyable pastime for many. You can catch a large mouth bass as long as you choose your location wisely and pick the right time of day to start. Once you start bass fishing, you will get better and better, and soon will be an expert at catching the large mouth bass.
