Decide upon Your Red Wine And Start Drinking To Health

By Sally Summerbee

Latest research is certainly good for those who enjoy that glass of red wine when eating dinner or perhaps later in the evening, armed with a fine cabernet , reflecting on the day as you sit in the warmth of the open fireplace. The next time you do this, you can start reflecting on the benefits to your health.

Throughout the ages, wine has been used for its medicinal qualities, treating labour pains to using it as a topical antiseptic. Now, as science and technology advance, we are finding out so much more about the value of wine to our health.

In the fight against cancer - Red wine contains resveratrol, a naturally occurring anti-fungicide found in the skins of red grapes. This acts as an antioxidant in the body, suppressing free radicals and thereby reducing the aging and potentially cancer-causing damage to DNA cells. Drinking a moderate amount of red wine has been shown to reduce the incidence of both lung and prostate cancer. In fact, drinking a glass of red wine a day may cut a man's risk of prostate cancer in half.

Health for the Heart - Mice and rats have been given doses of resveratrol and a marked decrease in plaque formation in the arteries and a decrease in blood clots has been found. Many believe that this may be the cause of the famous" French Paradox" of low death rates from heart issues even though they have a very rich and fat filled diet. The customary red wine at dinner each evening could account for this.

Weight Loss - In early studies, scientists have discovered that resveratrol also has fat-fighting properties. Mice, injected with the substance, showed that resveratrol prevents pre-fat cells from maturing. Great news but don't go all out on three pizzas and a glass of red wine just yet. The research is on-going.

Diabetes - Certain ingredients in red wine seem to regulate the blood sugar levels in the body. A glass of red wine drunk on a daily basis would seem to help in the prevention of diabetes, or certainly assist in controlling it. There is controversy with this study and it needs to be further investigated.

Sex - The intake of red wine seems to help a women's libido. If studies are to be believed, the wine assists in sexual libido possibly due to increased blood flow to the sexual organs. The study was made up of women who drank 1 or two glasses of red wine per day, those who drank alternative beverages and others who did not drink at all. Women who drank in excess of two glasses of alcohol were not tested as their non-sober state may cause increased sexual activity. It turns out that the women who drank two glasses of red wine each day were top of the charts when it came to sexual activity.

Red grape skins have melatonin in them. This is a sleep hormone that our body uses to prompt us to go to sleep. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvinon and Chianit wines are best for this effect.

The Common Cold- Keep away the dreads of the common cold with a moderate intake of wine. Research has shown that the flavonoids of red wine carry with them anti-viral properties or anti-inflammatory aspects in the wine will keep that cold at bay.

Cholesterol - Another group of chemicals in red wine called saponins are thought to lower cholesterol. These are believed to block the absorption of cholesterol by binding to it. Follow-up studies are being undertaken.

The Brain - With rats used in an experiment, scientists fed them large daily doses of red win and discovered that, unlike other alcoholic drinks, red wine does not damage the brain in large quantities. Obviously it is of no interest that someone should drink gallons of red wine and not suffer any brain damage, but what can be determined from this is the value of the antioxidants in red wine.

Be Cautious: Any health benefits derived from red wine is from a moderate consumption of the drink. Doctors suggest that 150ml or 5 ounces of red wine is fine for women on a daily basis and twice that for men.

And a tip: Since absorption of resveratrol through the gut is not entirely effective, it is recommended that the wine be slowly sipped in order to increase resveratrol absorption through the lining of the mouth.

Now that you have knowledge of the health benefits of red wine, I'll leave you ponder at the fireplace . To your health!
