For centuries, the medical profession has recognized the many benefits of wine to our health. The Bible states that Timothy was encouraged by the apostle Paul to drink wine to improve his health. In history, Hippocrates recommended certain wines to treat fever, disinfect wounds, etc.

1. Wine helps you avoid heart disease. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says that a glass of wine every day increases the blood's level of omega-3 fatty acids. These substances keep the heart as well as your arteries healthy.

2. Bones are strengthened. Wine increases the levels of hormones that are responsible for keeping bones healthy. An example of these hormones is estrogen. Regularly drinking a moderate amount of wine helps decrease the risk of developing hip fracture, osteoporosis, and other bone-related illnesses.

3. Wine helps prevent fatty liver disease. Recent studies show that wine drinkers have a lesser chance of developing fatty liver disease compared to those who abstain from all kinds of alcoholic beverages. It is important to note that this health benefit is applicable to wine drinkers only. Liquor or beer drinkers are at risk of developing the disease.

4. Wine helps prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes is the inability of the body to respond to insulin. Insulin is required in order for your cells to absorb glucose. This is why people with Diabetes have high glucose levels in their blood. A recent study shows that wine improves the body's sensitivity to Insulin.

5. Wine has high levels of Resveratrol. This substance inhibits memory deterioration that is related to Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease affects the parts of the brain that controls though, memory, and language. A person with this disease is unable to do his daily activities.

There are many more benefits of wine for your health, but this does not mean that everybody should be drinking wine. People who have alcoholism in their genes and those allergic to alcohol should stay away from any drink that contains alcohol at all costs.

A common question asked is, "How much wine is enough?" It is important to note that the health benefits of wine come from moderate consumption. Moderation is the key. Moderate consumption is defined by the American Heart Association as one to two, four-ounce glasses every day. But the amount of wine consumed also varies between men and women. Men can benefit from wine by consuming from one to two servings daily but women should drink only one glass of wine every day.

Knowing the benefits that wine can bring to your health helps one appreciate wine even more. Think about these things the next time you take a glass of wine. Not only is it enjoyable, but also healthy!
