How To Gather Emergency Food Supplies

By Tonthoy Rilathan

Individuals who have been in a crisis or suddenly found themselves in chaotic situations with a food shortage understand how important emergency food supplies are. Those in places that are plagued with natural disasters are often urged to stock up in the event that companies have to close for extended periods of times due to devastation. Also, there is no telling if money stored in accounts can be accessed immediately to buy food.

This is just a part of the reason public awareness agencies strongly advise persons to store items prior to needing them. What we decide to purchase is as equally important as our decision to store supplies. If it can perish easily then it's a bad choice and if you need to refrigerate, cook or microwave it, don't purchase it.

Things that are perfect for your supplies

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): "foods that require no refrigeration, water, special preparation, or cooking are best". These include canned goods, dried mixes and everyday staples you may already have, so essentially what is broadly referred to as 'non-perishables'. It's important to check expiry dates and use the stocks in the order bought.

It is advisable also that the nutritional value of the foods bought be a priority. Choose healthy options with enough calories, protein and nutrients to keep the family sustained. Also, never neglect to establish a good supply of water, this is just as important.

How to store items safely

Store foods wrapped in plastic if they are packaged in anything that can be soaked through or damaged, you can also put them in sealable containers. Do not put tinned goods where they can be punctured or damaged in any way since this can make them unsafe for consumption. Also, keep them somewhere cool and dry. Emergency food supplies should be stored in safe places that you can get to easily should you need to evacuate.
