Hospitality Staffing - Hiring The Right Staff

By Joe Maldonado

Hospitality staffing is one of the most difficult things to do. Hiring the right person in the right place in a hospitality establishment can either be a daunting task or it can become easy. If you are looking for someone with long experience and has knowledge about the industry in and out, it becomes easy to evaluate the candidate on the basis of the qualification and experience. From advertising to short listing and the hiring the right candidate is not easy and things become further difficult when the candidate is not the right one and he or she sounds self inflated. It is then that you need to make use of your intuitive judgment to understand whether is candidate is a right one or not.

What makes hospitality staffing difficult is the fact that the industry is people oriented and when people get involved, things turn up to be most difficult. You need to remember that you can exist in the industry only when you provide your customers with the comfort that they look for and the comfort that they believe they deserve. One error on your part and you will lose your customers and that can be detrimental to your business.

So, when you are hiring a staff, you need to find out whether the candidate understands the same thing or not. He or she must understand that it is his or her service which will enchant the customers more than his or her looks. The better the candidates understands this, the better a chance must he or she stand compared to other candidates.

However, it does not mean that appearance holds no value! Wrong! If the person serving is not well dressed and has a gloomy face which delivers a negative feeling to the customers or people visiting your cafe or restaurant, start praying to GOD (obviously if you believe) to save you from the upcoming disaster. It is not about how beautiful the waitress is or how handsome the waiter is. It is about how well dressed they are and how well groomed they are. They need to keep a bright face with a gleeful smile and this will keep your customers happy as well. The staff needs to be committed to the job and be caring and attentive to the customers. This is the secret mantra of the hospitality industry. There is no rocket science in here. It is all about correct hospitality staffing and finding the right person for the job.

When you are looking for hiring, what do you need to do? You need to first make a list of all the credentials that you are planning to ask for from the candidate. Once you have the list, you need to develop a few questions, perhaps 2 or 3, which will help you to judge the personality of the candidate in front of you and you need to have an instinct that will never turn you down. Make sure that your instinct finds out whether the person is honest or not and whether the certificates provided are authentic or not. As said earlier, in hospitality industry, there is not margin for error when it comes to hospitality staffing.
