How are paper cups manufactured? It begins with large rolls of paper board stock. Rolls can be various widths depending on the cup making machine. A roll is fed thru a machine where it is formed around a tube and glued along the edge. Next, the tube goes along the machine where a paper board base is inserted and also fixed into place. The paper board stock can be either poly or wax coated so it will be leak proof. The wax or poly coatings will be added as the cup is being created, or it can be applied to the board stock before the cup is formed. If the cup is going to be printed the poly coating or wax coating is applied after the printing is completed.

According to Coffee cup advertising, waxed paper cups can't be recycled in the literal sense of the word. The reason they cannot be recycled like your newspaper or a magazine is that they are coated in paraffin wax. That type of wax is a petroleum-based product. According to studies, recycling paper requires water, and adding oil ruins the process. However, there are several ways to reuse the wax cups and make other things using them. Some can be decorative while other suggestions are simply inexpensive entertainment for the children.
