Organic Vegetable Gardening -a Healthy and Rewarding Hobby

By Hillary Hill

There are many reasons to get involved with organic vegetable gardening, and having your own fresh vegetables is one of the main benefits. You can have a traditional type garden, or one that's built around your own needs and environment -it's not necessary to have many acres of land, for example. Although anyone can have a successful garden, you do need to pay attention to some important considerations, and we'll be touching on these in this article.

One problem that you may be dealing with is the rising price of food -especially those foods that the experts tell us we should be eating more of, such as organic fruits and vegetables. It's a lot less costly to serve organic vegetables to your family when you're growing them in your own garden! Of course, it's sometimes necessary to purchase a few items in order to start and maintain your garden, but there's no need to spend a lot of money. In fact, if you grow more of something than you can use, you may find a creative way to earn money from it, or perhaps engage in some bartering with friends or neighbors.

Rotation is also good for the soil, and prevents it from getting depleted. Different plants use different nutrients from the soil. So you'll be helping the health of all your vegetables as well as the soil by practicing crop rotation. Choosing the spot for your organic vegetable garden is another consideration that you have to make. You need to choose the right location for your garden; if you don't, it may not grow as well as you would like. Most vegetables need six hours of sunlight a day, so wherever you plant it, it needs to get lots of sun. You also have to consider soil quality and drainage.

When you start with a modest garden, you can control everything and then make it larger as you gain experience. People who try to do too much at first often find that it gets out of control and then they end up quitting. By beginning with only a small selection of vegetables, you have a much better chance of succeeding.

If you're going to be planting an organic vegetable garden, one of your first decisions is what exactly you'll be growing. The plants that you grow, for instance, should be ones that you and your family will enjoy consuming. It's also a good idea to start off with vegetables that aren't too hard to grow. Green beans, parsley, cucumbers and zucchini are all popular vegetables that grow easily in most locations. Although not as popular, you might want to have a go at growing spinach or beets. Most of these vegetables are very tasty, and can be eaten with your evening meals with the family.

Your motives for starting an organic vegetable gardening hobby don't matter, you'll get enjoyment from it and you'll grow plenty of food for your family. Not only are the organic vegetables in your garden more nutritious and affordable than the store bought veggies, they are tastier too because they are always fresh from the garden.
