Best Practices for Effective, Healthy Tooth Care.

By Ray Marsh

In Western culture it is really important to have a perfect, beautiful and white smile. Fashion magazines and Hollywood feed into this obsession. Even if you can't afford to have your teeth totally straightened you need to make sure that they are, at least, healthy.

After you know more about proper gum and tooth care you'll understand that keeping your mouth healthy and in great shape really isn't that difficult. Would it surprise you to learn that most of the things you do during the day aren't great for your teeth? The best thing you can do to defend yourself is to educate yourself, get regular checkups and take the proper action.

Do you know what is tartar and what is plaque? Plaque is what happens when bacteria sets in along your gum line. If plaque is not removed completely it hardens and turns into tartar. Tartar represents a more advanced condition, and it is also much more difficult to brush away. Beyond that, tartar represents more damage being done to your tooth.

Use a toothpaste that is healthy and contains anti-tartar ingredients. One other thing that you need to do is brush twice daily, which you already know, but you also need to work to keep your pressure light because pressure that is too heavy is bad for your gums.

When you visit your dentist, make sure that you ask questions. There is no better source of accurate information when it comes to learning to care for your oral health. For example, ask your dentist about the best toothbrush to use, and should you use a hard or soft bristle brush. One of the things to watch out for with hard bristled brushes is accidentally damaging your gums. Not only that but if you press down too hard when you use a toothbrush with that hard of bristles is that you might cause your gum line to recede prematurely. That is a process that will take some time, but receding gums when you are young can happen. If that happens, your teeth will start to feel very sensitive because part of them will be exposed after the gums recede.

Let's talk a little bit with the US's obsession with tooth whitening products. First, did you know that, when left natural, teeth are slightly yellowish? This is as true as true can be: white is not the natural color of teeth. You have to be very careful here because you might cause some really bad tooth issues. The one main ingredient is peroxide, there could be others out now, and it bleaches your teeth. It can cause serious damage to the enamel in your teeth. If you do this enough, you can seriously thin-out or lose the enamel. Beyond that, you won't have anything but dental problems.

We're pretty sure that the majority of oral health care is little more than being properly educated and practicing common sense. Don't allow yourself to give in to vanity and do a lot of procedures that might not be very healthy or even worth it in the long run.
