Food and Drink in the British Isles

By Andy Smith

UK restaurants offer a wide diversity of cuisine from all over the world but why not try some local dishes during your villa holiday. Traditional British food usually involves good plain cooking with fresh local ingredients and is often found in pubs or in restaurants which offer lighter versions of old favourites. Roast beef served with Yorkshire pudding or local specialties such as Lincolnshire or Cumberland pork sausages can be found on most menus. In the North Black Pudding made with offal is popular and lamb and chicken dishes feature on many menus along with hearty meat pies and homemade soups. Meals are usually served with chips, mash, boiled or roast potatoes and a good selection of vegetables.

Take a wine tour. Taking a tour of a vineyard near to Barcelona can be a great way to spend a day. You can see how the famous Cava is made for example, whilst enjoying the stunning countryside and also benefiting from some sample wine tasting.

Spain has a great wine making history and set of traditions and this is a great country for learning about wine making. One tip though is to make sure you have a guide who speaks English, if you do not speak enough Spanish or Catalan.

Get your Masterchef hat on!

Cupcake Decorating Cupcakes have become the new fairy cakes don't you know, and what better way to get in on the action by learning how to decorate your very own cupcakes. A professional cupcake maker (OK baker as they are known) will teach you how to decorate scrumptious cakes using coloured frosting, sugar strands, silver balls and all manner of lovely things. You will learn how to pipe and how to create the perfect cupcake, unlike the creations you used to make as a kid these are likely to be edible to. Out the Office also run this tasty event.

Flamenco dinner and dance. Flamenco is a wonderful traditional dance from Spain which is fascinating to watch and quite different from any form of dance you might have seen before, with its strong form of expression. You can take advantage of the Spanish culture by watching Flamenco whilst you also enjoy some fantastic local food.

You can also take advantage of the world famous and delightful Boqueria market in the centre of La Ramblas in Barcelona. Local recipes include the tasty Spanish omelette, the delicious desert crema catalana and the freshly caught fish.
