Why The Ice Cream Van Is Still Cool

By Jeff DeCleff

As a child growing up in the burbs, hearing the delightful and fascinating music of the Mr Whippy truck driving up my neighbourhood was one of the pinnacles of my week.

Registering a soft sound in the other street, my little sensors would pop up and I might become targeted on locating the location.

Was it actually? Might it be? As the wagon made its way into my domain and rolled down the hill I'd leap up with joy and rush to locate my parents, closely followed by my younger brothers.

Bobbing up and down in front of whichever parent was unlucky enough to be the first to be found, we'd scream "Can we have Mr Whippy? ! May we have Mr Whippy pleeeeeeaaaaaaseee?!!"

More frequently than not, our mannered prayers were unluckily knocked back, however when that enchanting afternoon when my folks spilled the church money finally dawned, we were all smiles from ear to ear. What should we get this time? Who should go for the popcorn? Who was picking the nut sundae? Were there any more flavours to try?

Now that I'm all mature, I cannot say that always have the matching reaction when I hear Mozart's 'Greensleeves ', but a familiar (albeit auto- muffled) emotion of excitement takes over everytime I see an ice cream stand.

While the custom of the Mr Whippy van is certainly fading, the presence of ice cream stands and shops are still felt in cities, communities and at carnivals and fetes throughout Australia. And while many of the customary favorites are still standing their ground, more varied and modern flavours are often taking the spotlight.

True to form, whichever ice cream store or stand you visit, you are certain to find something to satisfy the whole family. Whether it's bubblegum for the boys, strawberry for the girls, or double-choc cookie dough for the teens, the range of styles and flavours of ice cream available frequently necessitates a five minute consideration period in front of the display window.

I, personally, have turned into a boysenberry-in-a-waffle-cone sort of girl. Sure, the cravings for the old choc top still remain, but selecting a pudding (or mid-afternoon treat) that covers one of my daily portions of fruit is little short of a blessing. With a spread of exquisite gelatos and sorbets, there are even options for the lactose-intolerant.

While preferences and diet requirements may change, the sweet traditional goodness of the ice cream stall remains principally the same. At your child's college fete, your community fair and even on your visit to Luna Park, you are definite to discover a traditional ice cream vendor offering your childhood favs. From choc tops to snow cones, and fairy floss to coloured popcorn, you can show your youngsters how it was done in the 'good old days'.

Ice cream is the treat for everyone and, in fact , at least at one time in our lives, I screamed, you screamed, we all screamed for ice cream!
