By Anya Shiela Richards

Cupcake decorating is fun and easy once you get familiar with the basics. One of the biggest advantages of making cupcakes versus making a whole cake is that you can have much more fun with these bite-size morsels by getting creative with your frosting ideas.

Before you do, you should know some basics about frosting and other edible cupcake toppers. The best way to learn is through experience, trial and error are the greatest teachers when it comes to baking and decorating cupcakes.

Types of Frostings

The classic form of frosting is the glaze. Made from sugar, water and cream or milk this will create a smooth thin texture which by itself can be poured over or drizzled for that hard sweet crust. Chocolate and vanilla can also be added for flavors.

Buttercream Frosting

Commonly used as cake fillers, icing and cake/cupcake decorations. This frosting is created by mixing powdered sugar, liquid, butter and other flavorings. The powdered sugar will stabilize the mixture and will easily dissolves during the beating process.

Whipped Cream Frosting

As the name implies, whipped cream frosting is made of whipped cream instead of butter with powdered sugar and other flavorings. With this frosting, mix the mixture until the frosting separates from the beater when pulled out. To maintain consistency, this mixture should be refrigerated.

-is a very common type of frosting and is very easy to do. Just mix powdered sugar, egg whites, vanilla and other added flavorings. Now since these are cupcakes and our children will most likely be the basic consumer, the health department advises us to use meringue powder instead of egg whites because of the salmonella outbreaks.

Royal Icing Frosting

Royal icing is most commonly used frosting for cake, cookie, and cupcake decorating. It's easy to make with powdered sugar, egg whites, and other basic ingredients. This frosting is easy to make at home and to color with food coloring so you can get more inventive with your decorating ideas.

Ganache - At first you'll think that Ganache is hard to do but in fact, it's one of the easiest frostings to do not to mention really mouthwatering. Ganache consists of melted dark or semi-dark chocolate blended with heavy cream for that think frosty goodness. If you actually mix it thick enough, you can make truffles.

Fondant - is again made from sugar, glucose and water. This is often being colored and being used as dough for cake/cupcake designs.

Fondant is a type of frosting that is made of powdered sugar, glucose and water. When cooled, this frosting will harden making it a popular ingredient for cupcake/cake decorations. Basically, the fondant is a sweet edible play dough; which makes it fun to work with.

Marzipan is similar in texture of the fondant but is made of sugar and ground almonds. This is also being used to make beautiful 3D edible designs.

Now that you know the different types of frosting, remember that there are also even more to choose from. Fondant is a type of frosting that hardens when it's cooled and offers a smooth surface cupcake or to cut decorations from. Marzipan is similar but has a texture similar to clay. Use marzipan to make delicious 3D edible designs. Gumpaste is very similar in texture to marzipan but becomes brittle when it hardens. Decide what you want your decoration to look like and then choose the type of frosting that would best suite your needs.
