For those who don't know, Champagne is a region near Reims, France, where the sparkling wine is been fermented. Here, several centuries ago, the Benedictine monk, Dom Perignon had an important role in the development of the sparkling wine. Nowadays, Dom Perignon represents one of the most notable brands of champagne and it became noted only between the two World Wars Moet and Chandon launched it on the market as a new vintage wine. Moet was among the first suppliers for the aristocrats. It supplied champagne for Napoleon I and Queen Elizabeth II.

Bollinger is another major champagne house popular for its Blanc de noirs vintage wine. The brand became famous after the campaign set by a lady named Lilly Bollinger. Her mission was to make this champagne brand popular.

Considered, along with Dom Perignon and other notable houses, crown jewels, Krug is one of the best champagne brands in the history. It has a very characteristic savor because it's made with a complete barrel fermentation and it's a dry wine.

If you want to know the most expensive champagne in the world, you should probably check the Piper-Heidsieck brand. Marilyn Monroe used to drink a glass every morning. The most expensive bottle was the Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck, sold at $275,000.

The oldest champagne ever opened was a Perrier-Jout (vintage 1825). They tasted and opened it two years ago, back in 2009. This famed brand produces a little over 3 million bottles per year. The production is just a bit smaller from the 3.2 million bottles per year produced by Louis Roederer, which is another big champagne house that produces mostly non-vintage champagne made of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The region of Champagne is filled with many legendary champagne houses, some other of these are Pol Roger, Taittinger, Duval Leroy, Gosset, Henriot. Still, today champagne is created in other parts of the world too, only it's not legal to brand it "Champagne", however it's the same method of making it. In Italy we have the famous Prosecco and it's become famous as the essential ingredient in the Bellini cocktail.

The heart of the best Champagne brands remains in France and if you have the chance to toast one of the most expensive champagne you can consider yourself a lucky man/woman.
