Get the Perfect Cheese on Gratins with a Butane Lighter

By Wendy Mallikarjunan

Have you ever been in a fine restaurant, ordered a gratin and enjoyed that delicious combination of crunchy crust along with thick creamy cheese? It is quite a delectable treat when you can enjoy a gratin cooked perfectly like this. You may have even tried to recreate the gratin at home without success. It can be so hard to create that perfectly designed combination of creamy cheese and crunchy bread crumbs. Chances are, you have tried to do this by toasting the top of the gratin in the over, but this slow heat will not allow for crispness. You need a better method, and you can find that method by making use of a kitchen lighter or torch.

Step one will be to cook your gratin. No matter what type of gratin you wish to prepare, you will need to go through all of the cooking steps for the gratin, but do not place the topping on it. Preparing the topping will be a separate step and it will make use of the torch lighter and not the oven or stove.

Step two will include preparing your topping. Make sure to use the type of shredded cheese that the recipe calls for and use sealed bread crumbs that will be fresh enough to crisp well. Once you mix the bread crumbs and the cheese, you will need to sprinkle it in a thick layer on the gratin. Be sure to cover the whole mixture well with the topping.

Turn the butane lighter on high. This is important since it will take intense heat to melt the cheese into that perfect, creamy concoction while toasting the bread crumbs at the same time. As you torch the topping, keep the lighter about two inches from the surface of the gratin. Move it slowly but steadily over the topping. Do not hesitate while moving the torch over the toppings since it will burn if it stays in one place too long.

When this happens, you will know that the topping of the gratin is complete. You will have a perfect combination of creamy, melted cheese along with crispy bread crumbs. You can create the perfect gratins if you make use of that torch lighter that you have in your kitchen drawer.
