Cake Decorating Technique

By Dan Bass

If you are just a greenhorn in baking, it is important to practice different cake decorating techniques so you can build a solid foundation when the time comes you need to show off your own creative juices. One good thing about cake decorating techniques is it is art that you can eat. You have a lot of leeway and freedom to create imaginative ideas by using different designs and colors.

Practicing cake decorating techniques usually rely on trial and error method but after getting your feet wet, you will learn to maintain the right pressure on the pastry bag, creating wonderful edible art sooner than you think.

The cake is like an artist's canvass, whereas icing serves as the paint. When you are applying butter icing or frosting, the best cake decorating technique is to put a large dollop in the center on the top. Get a spatula and spread the icing towards the edge of the cake. Once the top is covered with icing, the sides would be the next priority. The cake decorating technique here is to use the dollop, stand the spatula straight up against the side of the cake and then spin the cake. After this, the icing should be smothered on the cake. Using a spatula, dip it with icing and run it over the cake again. This cake decorating technique would give the cake a professional presentation. The next cake decorating technique relies on some flair such as cake toppers and other designs.

As a disclaimer, there is no need to put the actual word magnets on the cake. One alternative is using miniature plastic toys. The toys should be placed in a pan or colander and sanitize it with hot water. The toys can be used as a cake topper by putting it on top of the cake. Children would truly enjoy eating and looking at the cake.

Decorating the cake with flowers is simple yet elegant. You may opt to use fondant icing to recreate petals and bulbs or you can use the real thing such as violets, wild flowers, pansies and hibiscus. If you are using real flowers, you can powder it with meringue and powdered sugar and decorate it on the cake. If you prefer using fondant icing to recreate flowers, just roll it out on a tube and pinch it on the other end to make it span out. When it comes to cake decorating techniques, practice makes perfect.
