An Energy Shot for Social Networking? Enter Facedrink

By Darryl Williams

In recent years social media, likely more than anything else, has significantly impacted most of our daily lives. Facebook, the most famous, is moving out of the confines of a typical social network and becoming more and more integrated with other parts of our lives. Indeed, this is something we can notice when hearing common phrases such as "liking this" in everyday conversation or when seeing fashioned Facebook inspired Halloween costumes! Besides, the story of how Facebook was created has even been featured in the Oscar nominated film: "The Social Network".

Most recently, I discovered that the social networking site has even dipped its foot into the beverage world! The young California based company, Facedrink, has developed a Facebook inspired energy drink shot. The company promotes the flavor as "tasting like friendship" as a reference to the social media site as well as utilizing the phrase "It gives you Social Energy" in marketing and they define it as "Social energy is what you need to manage all of the events in your life."

Facedrink is similar to 5-hour Energy which is the number one selling product in the energy shot category. However, the makers of the product claim that it is a healthier alternative to traditional energy shots. The three-calorie energy shot is free of both sugar and carbohydrates. It contains a blend of natural fruit flavors, taurine and 140mg of caffeine.

Facedrink, which is packaged in a deep blue shrink sleeve with simple graphics, has definitely a familiar design. Indeed, its logo is done in the Facebook white font style as well as "The Social Drink" and "Add as Friend" below it.

It is unlikely for Facedrink to be named the official drink of Facebook since it has obviously no actual connection with the social media site. This drink is likely going to face some legal problems when Mark Zuckerberg gets wind of it; he is very vigilant when it comes to protecting his brand. The sale of the "Poking Inventor", an action figure that bore his image, has recently been banned although I will admit that is more of a serious issue.

The social energy shot targets Facebook over-users by promising them more "social energy". So is Facedrink destined to be the drink of choice for nerds around the globe?
