Cooking Tips That Can Work For Everyone

By Judy Ohira

Many people see cooking as something bothersome. It's just a chore that they have to do, especially when you have kids, on a daily basis. However, with the right recipes and tips, cooking lunch and dinner every day doesn't have to be a drag, it can actually be fun and a way to employ your creativity. This article provides you with suggestions to do just that.

When using a meat thermometer to check the temperature of meat or poultry, ensure that you do not insert it too close to the bone or the pan. The bones and pans are hotter than the surrounding flesh, and you may get an inaccurate reading. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the meat to get the most accurate temperature.

To lighten up recipes that call for sour cream or mayonnaise, substitute plain Greek yogurt for half of the creamy ingredient. This thick, rich version of yogurt is full of protein and is often non-fat, so you can skimp on calories without altering the rich texture of your salad dressing or other recipe.

Instead of buying boneless, skinless chicken breasts, buy your chickens whole--either intact or cut up. Not only is it far more economical to bone your own chicken and get several meals out of all its meat, but you can use the bones to make your own chicken stock for recipes, soup bases, and more.

If you and your kids are getting bored with the same old bag of frozen sweet corn every night, mix it up. For a Thai-inspired flavor that will be enjoyed by kids and adults alike, try mixing coconut flakes into your corn. Add some lime juice and cilantro and you won't even recognize your usual side dish.

When you have decided what you want to prepare for the evening meal, make sure you have left yourself enough time to prepare it. This includes the prep time, as well. If this is the first time you are making this particular recipe, you may want to add on 10 or 15 minutes to the directions just to be sure you aren't rushed at the last minute.

Around the holidays it may be tempting to try many new and complicated recipes, but you will save time and energy if you stick with simpler ones. This is a big help if you are cooking with children, since they can become restless with things that are too complicated.

One of the things that you should spend a lot of money on, is your kitchen utensils, pots and pans, and other cookware set. These are extremely valuable investments as they will serve as the foundation for all of your cooking. You will want to extend the life of these tools as long as possible. Cooking is so much easier if you are using high quality cookware, such as 18/10 stainless cookware and utensils.

As the article shows there are many ways to make cooking less of a drag and more interesting. Following these tips will help you engage creatively in an activity that could otherwise be boring or unpleasant. Now, cooking dinner or lunch for your family won't be a chore, it will be something to look forward to.
