Chicken Fingers Are A Crowd Favorite

By Marsha Silva

Chicken fingers can also be called chicken tenders, chick fillets, or chicken strips. Names aside, they are all basically the same item. They are chicken meat (usually white meat made from the rib meat trimmed from the breast.) that doesn't have any bones in it or skin on it.

They are created by coating the meat with a mixture of breading. They are then deep fried. Some people do make them by grilling or brazing them without the breading.

The entree is served in the United States, Canada, Australia, and to a lesser extent, Europe. Europe has a less consistent form, as they are commonly made into other similar items, like schnitzel. The U. S. Consumes the most by far. However, it is a simple recipe that can easily be duplicated anywhere that has access to chickens. Truthfully, most of the world has access to chickens.

Breading style and meat quality are the most common differences. In the Northeastern portion of the U. S., they are made with an egg batter. It makes the texture very smooth. Chinese restaurants in the area almost exclusively serve them as main courses or appetizers.

In other regions, a variation is served without eggs in the batter and there is a much more coarse texture. Fast food chains have a tendency to use reformed chickens in their recipe. Though cut, reformed bits are more commonly referred to as 'nuggets'.

There are a lot of great sauces that can be served with them. Ranch and blue cheese dressing, honey mustard, ketchup, buffalo sauce, barbecue, sweet and sour, and garlic and butter are all great sauce options. There are an infinite amount of sauces, but those are the most popular.

Serving options can also vary quite a bit. It's popular in the United States for them to be served with french fries. They can also be served on a bun. A bit less common option is serving them on top of a salad. Entire restaurants are built on this versatile food item.

These strips were introduced on the menus of several fast food chains, but never caught on because of the popularity and inexpensive nature of nuggets. More commonly now, these chains advertise 'all white meat' in their nuggets, rather than going with full strips.

For better or worse, this food item is a staple of most modern diets. They can be healthy or unhealthy based on the amount and style of breading used. Chicken fingers are a fun to eat food item, and they're worth a try. Read more about: chicken fingers
