Paper Cups Have Been A Great Help In Stopping Germs From Spreading

By Denver Burke

At the beginning of the last century it was still a common sight to see students sharing containers when drinking water at places such as school faucets. Some people felt this was unhygienic and a cause for concern. The result was paper cups.

A survey was done in public schools by a professor of Biology and the result published in 1908 in a widely circulated magazine. This study dealt on the hazards of the practice of sharing drink containers. It outlined the health dangers of this practice.

In the same year the health cup was invented. As a result of the article bans were imposed in some institutions on the shared use of drink containers. The bans spread to trains and by 1917 the public glass was gone from railroad travel. When a flu epidemic swept the world in 1918 the use of the containers was widely accepted. This epidemic proved the value of disposable drink containers.

Hospitals followed suit. Although these disposable containers were introduced at first for reasons of hygiene, it had an unexpected secondary advantage. They turned out to be cheaper than maintaining the re-usable glasses. They became a common sight at water fountains.

The first of these containers for hot drinks were glued. A small amount of clay at the bottom served as waterproofing. A process of spinning it at a high speed spread the clay evenly up the walls of the container. The modern cup is made from a product called called cup board. Multiply paper machines are used in their manufacture. A wax or plastic coating is applied to make them waterproof.

Disposable drink containers are rarely recycled for health reasons. They are designed for once-off usage. They are environmentally friendly and do not leave a carbon footprint.

The little paper cups can be credited with the saving of many lives as it has halted the spread of infection in many ways. It is used once and thrown away. We owe a lot to the inventors of this modern day hygienic drinking vessel.
