Keeping Your Grill from Getting Grimy

Your grill can be kept clean with some simple tips. Some of them have to do with how you adhere to a schedule of cleaning that prevents grease and other materials from hardening on the grill. Some of it is just common sense, as well.

A charcoal grill requires that you clean it out every time you use it, which is a great thing for encouraging yourself to keep up on the maintenance. You'll want to keep the wire brush handy to remind yourself to give it a good scrubbing when you're done cooking on it. This ensures that the items you cooked don't harden over time and become even harder to remove after the fact.

Make sure you don't overdo it when you're coating meats in marinades when they're already on the grill. Some outdoor cooking fans like to go crazy with the seasonings but this doesn't really help the taste of the meat and it certainly doesn't keep your grill clean. Some of the ingredients in marinades are actually corrosive, so you want to keep them off of the metal on your grill as much as possible. This will preserve your grill and ensure that it stays in good shape for a long time to come.

If you want to give your grill an extra cleaning, you can sometimes fire it up for a while without cooking anything on it. This is a good way to get the particles that won't come off at all. Scrub it down again after it's been heating for a while to get the remainder of the particles off the grill and they should look like new.

Make sure you check your hoses and igniter on your gas grill before you start cooking and clean them off, if needed. On a charcoal grill, you just need to makes sure that the grill itself is cleaned out. Lighting them requires nothing more complex than a torch lighter, some fluid and some charcoal. If you have your grill stored for the year and are taking it out for the first time, be sure to check for rust and to check all the connections to make sure that they're secure and ready to go.
